When I was in my 20’s (over 27 years ago), I had 3 goals which revolved around my investing in Real Estate. The first goal was to make wise decisions in every area of property ownership from the initial purchase to the repairs and management of every house or property. I wanted to be different from those landlords who only cared about “what is in it for them” & “making lots of money” off their tenants while not maintaining the property or holding the tenants safety & well-being in high regard.
That desire lead to my 2nd goal which was to be able to offer my tenants a nice place to live at a lower rent amount than the going rents for the area. Then, after a few years of tenancy, I would offer some of those homes to the tenants to purchase on a sales agreement with little or no money down, making them proud home owners and giving them a sense of great pride and accomplishment.
The 3rd goal was that I wanted to find opportunities to be able to use & expand on my “Handy-Mam” (Mam because I am a female) skills and abilities.
In the past 27 years of “investing” money, time, emotions, etc., I have accomplished those 3 goals and so much more. I have installed new electric services & rewired numerous homes, hung more drywall than I care to recall, painted hundreds of rooms, designed and installed completely new kitchens & bathrooms, installed many water heaters, ceiling fans, ceramic floors, doors, reworked plumbing, roofed & re-roofed. I have taken course in masonry, electrical, plumbing, etc, and I’ve been to the school of “hard knocks”. …I think you get the picture; I have been a general contractor in every sense of the word “general”.
I had become fairly proficient at the whole “landlord” thing — repairing and improving houses and managing tenants & properties that I was asked to share my knowledge & skills by teaching adult education classes on related topics. These classes continue to be popular now for over 20 years.
For several years I have also been leading volunteer disaster recovery trips to repair homes for victims who have either lost their homes or had their homes damaged by hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, etc. And right here in York County we do year round repairs “free” for low income, elderly and disabled persons as well as conduct “Home Energy Workshops” at Senior Centers & Community Outreaches.
My years of experience with houses & people has lead me to start this business doing home inspections. I love helping people, and I also believe I can make a difference by sharing my knowledge and experience as I continue to educate homeowners, buyers, & sellers about the condition of one of the largest investments they have or may ever make — their home or potential home. You can count on an unbiased, professional and informational inspection when you team up with New Leaf for all of your home inspection needs.
